Hi mates,
I’m planning a motorcycle trip across south-eastern Europe and Austria is in my way. I plan to be in Austria on the 8/9th of August. I plan to come from Venice and be heading to Budapest, so I’ll enter Austria maybe through Arnoldstein and then go past Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz and then cross the Hungarian border on Szengotthart.
I’ll be really grateful if you share some tips to make my stay in Austria nicer. I have some specific questions:
1. Can you make some suggestions about the roads? I prefer to go a bit slower on roads with nice views, turns, etc. rather than the boring highways. I’d also prefer toll-free roads. Are there paid highways on my path?
I’ll be also happy to get info about interesting sights around my route. I plan to spend a some time in Graz so you can suggest places to visit there and even have a beer with some of you
2. How is the traffic police? Is it a problem to ride faster than the limit? Are there lots of speeding cameras or they rely more on under-cover police cars with radars?
3. I plan to spend a night in Graz, can you suggest cheap places to stay (up to 30-40 euros for two of us). If sleeping in Graz is too expensive I can go to a small city somewhere around, can you suggest one? Is it OK to set up a tent somewhere outside the cities in that part of the country?
4. It will be great if you can share info about motorcycle service and tyre repair centres along the way in case of emergency.
5. And of course everyone willing to join the trip in some part is welcome!
Thanks everyone!
how long do you like to stay in Austria?
We have a lot of beautiful roads to plan a tour
The way to Budapest will be boring enough…
To keep an eye on the speedlimit is no mistake! Normaly its the normal police contoling that with mobile radar.
To give you some information it would be also great to know how many km you want to ride a day
To use a tent is no problem but you have to go on a camping place.
So just let us know and you will get a lot of informations for sure!
it’ a good choice to drive through the south of austria, carinthia is the nicest district of all
1. route
drive from Arnoldstein to Villach, and then look for the road with a "„blue 85"“ (Bundesstraße) symbol - a small village called ferlach should be your next stop. (our famous glock guns are from there) - the agip is a nice petrol station.
after your break drive in the same direction (blue85) - next villages are sittersdorf - bleiburg and lavamünd.
In lavamünd: turn right after the bridge (River: Drau) and drive 1 km/mile in the direction to the border (SLO). When you see a sign with „„Soboth““ (blue B69) you have to turn left - enjoy this road - very lovely, but only 70kmh speed limit for bikes (stupid law from stupid politicians).
this road is very dangerous for your purse – cops and cams everywhere.
Along the B69 you’ll find some nice places to rest, especially the “Kärnten Blick” can’t be ignored – bikes, bikes, bikes.
After the village Soboth (on top of the mountain) you haver to take the B76 and drive through deutschlandsberg and stainz, in lieboch is your next turn to the B70 – but it’s no problem to find now Graz, every Sign will have information how to get to Graz.
2.cheap room in graz:

3. fees and penalties
Have fun here, but be aware of cars at the roadside (laser inside) and drive the “max. +20 kmh formula” , no one will punish you for that.
Our penalties start at 25 euro (speeding up to 20kmh), and 35 euro for maybe over 20kmh faster. (experience values)
best regards
stefan
…I don´t know how old you are, there is a Youth hostel near the Railwaystation of Graz its around 20 Euros pp. I think thats one of the cheapest places to stay. Building up your tent is forbitten but normaly you won´t get much problems. But keep an Eye on the Hunters
The penalties for speeding are better than in Italy.
Thanks folks! I didn’t imagine that I’ll get so much info so quick.
We plan to ride about 400km a day. One stop is calculated to be around Graz and the next one will be Budapest
I suggest that you will need 300 km from Graz to Budapest, there is not too much left for Austria
I would spend about 3 days in Austia that gives you the chance to have a realy beatiful Tour!
Thats no mistake!
Have you been to Hungary before? Its a very nice country but for biking??? you will be traveling along the fields without hills (dont even talking of mountans).
where are you from? What have you already seen when you come from Venice?
…you can visit the Sziget Festival at this time and sleep there in your tent, if you like Festivals you will love this one.
If you see a black Honda Hornet 600ccm in Arnoldstein that could be me!
Please read the posting of „haudiwaudi“ carefully! He is right that is a good tour!
On „blue 69“ there is a „bikerrest“ called Route69, you cant fail it! I think it would be not a mistake to book a room there for your stay... www.route69.at

You should really think about staying longer in carinthia an styria ther are so many awesome roads...

In Austria we say: "oben bleiben" which means: stay on seat and don

The whole trip is Bulgaria → Greece → Italy → Austria → Hungary → Romania → Bulgaria
Yes, I’ll be visiting Sziget festival for three days That’s the purpose of the trip but we decided to go the long way round the Adriatic. That’s why we can’t avoid Hungary, even though boring.
you are from Bulgaria? Do the trip the other way round! And spend 3 days here.
But Greece is also great! You will take the ferry from Patras or Igoumenitsa?
sleep in a tent at „Route69“ they have lots of space! i forgot…
I’m looking for a ferry from Igoumenitsa to Bari or Brindisi
